Labor Support/Professional Doulas:

*please note that I keep my own personal list of recommended doulas in the Richmond area.  The names on my list are all women who I have previously worked with and/or supported former students during labor.  The names on this list come highly recommended by former students and myself.  This list is available to students taking a Fast Track, Refresher, Bradley, or Private Session.

Richmond Area Providers Supportive of Natural Childbirth

Please review the Obstetrical Guide for the most up to date C section rates and statistics at

A.   Obstetricians and Midwives practicing together

There are many great practices in town where obstetricians and midwives practice alongside one another (you can see either the OB or midwife or both).  Most women interested in a natural birth find they fit well with a certified nurse midwife, and this model gives you the option of working primarily with a midwife (with the OB on call as back up).  The OBs in these practices tend to provide more holistic care and view birth as a normal, safe process (similar to the midwives they practice with).

The list below is in no particular order

Postpartum/ Mothering Circle

The Postpartum/Mothering Circle is for anyone who can benefit from the support and community of other women in the year or two after a baby is born: new mothers, veteran mothers, and anyone who's interested in having a night out to talk about the topics that are on our minds and hearts so often.

Topics range from more common issues (sleep, teething, diapering options, etc.) to more rarely discussed issues (sibling rivalry, relationship issues, postpartum depression, etc.). The topics each month are decided by what's on the minds of the mothers who attend. Our conversations are always inclusive, respectful, informative, and supportive.

The group meets the first Tuesday of every month at Franklin Goose (Upstairs) 3401 West Cary Street Richmond, VA 23221 from 7-8:30. Meetings are free, and you can attend on a drop-in basis. There is parking on Cary St, Freeman St (side street) and around the back of the store.

Please bring only babies in arms, because it is harder for mothers to participate in deeper, more intimate conversations with older children in tow.
Email Thérèse thakkuhn@gmail.com or Sarah sarah.allenshort@gmail.com if you have questions about the group. Please come even if you're worried you won't know anyone. It's a community for everyone!

Postpartum Depression Support Group

The group will be facilitated by McKenzie Casad with Cypress Counseling. McKenzie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in birth and postpartum. The group is free and babies are welcome. This new support group is for women with postpartum mood and anxiety disorders and is affiliated with Postpartum Support Virginia: http://www.postpartumva.org/. This event repeats every month on the third Friday. 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at the Richmond Public Library Near West End Branch Patterson between Libbie and Willow Lawn Drive
